Severus Snape
Wednesday, July 29, 2009
I suddenly realised how much I actually liked Snape in the Harry Potter series... Espcially the Severus Snape played by Alan Rickman. In fact, after giving it serious thoughts, Snape is actually my favourite character in the entire series!
You can never guess until the very last moment whether he was on the Death Eaters' side or Dumbledore's side. He killed Dumbledore for the better good of destroying Voldermort. He hates Lupin but still concocted the transformation potion for him. He hates Harry but still flared up when Dumbledore wanted to put Harry at risk. As quoted, he said, "You have used me. I have spied for you, lied for you, put myself in mortal danger for you. Everything was supposed to be to keep Lily Potter's son safe. Now you tell me you have been raising him like a pig for slaughter—" Albus Dumbledore: "But this is touching, Severus. Have you grown to care for the boy, after all?" — Snape and Dumbledore discuss Harry Potter's fate and Snape's promise to Dumbledore
Snape was an intensely private man who viewed emotional display as a sign of weakness. As an Occlumens, he was adept at concealing his thoughts and feelings, which allowed him to maintain a cold, collected demeanor. But still, he was prone to temper tantrums, especially when it came to Harry Potter. Snape also inevitably became furious whenever he was accused of cowardice.
"Fools who wear their hearts proudly on their sleeves, who cannot control their emotions, who wallow in sad memories and allow themselves to be provoked this easily – weak people, in other words – they stand no chance against his powers! You will find yourself easy prey for the Dark Lord!" —Snape tries to get Harry to empty himself of emotion
I agree with Harry, who said that Snape was one of the bravest man. Despite his mean demeanor, he was an immensely brave, courageous man and had tremendous strength of character. Everything he did was motivated by his devotion to the memory of Lily Evans, who he loved from boyhood to death. He was a brave and loyal ally to the Order of the Phoenix and in his role as a double agent, took great personal risk in ensuring Harry's safety at the hands of Lord Voldemort. Dumbledore even remarked upon Snape's bravery, commenting that "sometimes I think we sort too soon." Snape also proved himself capable of pushing aside his grudges in extreme situations, such as when he saved Remus Lupin's life during the Battle Over Little Whinging and dutifully concocting the Wolfsbane Potion every month so that he could make his werewolf transformations safely.
"...he was probably the bravest man I ever knew." —Harry Potter talking to his son, Albus Severus about Severus Snape
Severus Snape is also one of the best wizard in the entire HP series. For one, Snape had a talent and passion for the Dark Arts from a young age, and was especially proficient at curses. That's why he had always wanted to be a Defense against the Dark Arts teacher.
He was also a Master Potioneer. He specialized in Potion making, teaching the subject at Hogwarts as an adult and able to come up with innovative methods to achieve quicker and better results as a teenage student, as written in his old textbook that Harry found, which was named as the property of the Half Blood Prince.
Thirdly as a Spell Creator, Snape had a gift for creating new spells. Some of the spells he invented were Sectumsempra, the spell whcih will cause sword like injuries on the enemy. It was used on Draco Malfroy by Harry when attacked. The nonverbal Levicorpus and its counter-curse, Liberacorpus was also invented by Snape. Levicorpus is a jinx invented by Severus Snape under the guise of the Half-Blood Prince. It causes a victim to be hoisted into the air and dangle upside-down. It is better performed nonverbally.
Snape was accomplished in Occlumency and Legilimency; he was able to both protect his own thoughts and access the minds of others. In particular, his skill in Occlumency is very noteworthy, as he used it to hide his betrayal from Lord Voldemort, who was regarded as the most skilled Legilimens of all time.
Patronus Charm: Snape was the only known Death Eater that was able to produce a Patronus, which, like Lily Potter's, was a doe. The most likely reason for this is that Snape was not a loyal Death Eater, and that his unconditional love for Lily was stronger even than his practice of the Dark Arts.
"Snape's Patronus was a doe, the same as my mother's. Because he loved her for nearly all of his life." —Harry Potter on Snape's lifelong love for Lily Evans
Snape was shown to be a talented duelist, able to hold off by himself (if only briefly) a group of three Hogwarts professors that included Pomona Sprout, former dueling champion Filius Flitwick and extremely powerful witch Minerva McGonagall. He assisted in a dueling club in 1992 with Gilderoy Lockhart, defeating and humiliating him with a single spell.
Snape is the only known wizard besides from Voldermort who could fly without the use of a broom. Snape also seems to have had a talent for healing, or at least counter-curses, as he helped save Katie Bell after she touched a cursed necklace, and Dumbledore after his mishap with Marvolo Gaunt's Ring. He also easily healed Draco when Harry used Sectumsempra on him, being the one who invented it.
The first potions class was one of my favourite scenes. Alan has fully captured the essense of Snape cool and aloof demeanor with just a few stares and expression. Definitely a talented actor! And I DO NOT care how old is he. Talented means talented!
Not to mention, Snape also have his cute moments... Look at this video. Its my all time favourite scene.
And this is one of the scenes where Severus Snape got the most lines. In fact, I think it is the only scene where he get more than 8 lines to say haha...
This one is so totally sexy haha... Snape I mean... Not Potter.
So in conclusion, pity he's too old haha... But he's still my favourite~~

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
Thursday, July 16, 2009
Warning: Below is a personal review of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. So if you have not watched the movie and do not want spoilers, come back after you have seen the movie.
Today I went down to the premiere screening of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince with Alison. I didn't read the book before so I didn't know what to expect in the movie except the Dumbledore died. (I didn't know how he died too).
I didn't particularly liked the starting of the movie. Instead of the usual setting, it started with total irrelevant things like Muggles, and attacks happening to them brought on by the Death Eaters. For a moment I thought I had entered the wrong theater as it seems like a scene out of War of the World or The Day After Tomorrow. Not that I didn't like it, but I would have preferred the setting in Uncle Vernon's house haha^^
Then it went on to Harry reading the Daily Prophet in a Muggle Cafe @ the subway. Urm... Like Harry had totally gone mad and have no regards for the Muggles knowing the magic world. Like nobody will think out of the ordinary when they see moving pictures on a newspaper. And he actually FLIRTED with the waitress. Like totally Oh My God. Since when did Harry become so flirtatious?
But there are also a couple of scenes that I especially liked. First up is the scene where Ron was trying out for the Keeper. Its like he was totally serious, and totally OVER geared up for it. And Harry was like having absolutely no ideas as to how to make the students keep quiet until Ginny screamed at them.
Second one was when Ron was playing Keeper during the try-out. He was like totally dunno what to do just anyhow block with all parts of his body haha... Hermione was very funny too when she tried to hide her concern for Ron as Lavender was basically sitting at the edge of her seat.
My favourite part was when Ron ganna the love potion that was meant for Harry... Especially the part where he claimed to be in love with that girl whoever she is and Harry replied, "You haven't even seen her!" and he was like, 'Yeah, maybe you can give us an introduction?". Haha... After they went to the Professor room to get Ron's curse lifted and he was like all over the Professor... And he even fell off the couch when he tried to sit down. And when he was finally up and going, he told Harry," Someday these girls are going to kill me!"
The next farni part was at the green house when Harry was about to go visit Hagrid and was stopped by the Professor. The professor stopped him with, "Harry!" in a very exasperated tone, and Harry replied," Professor!" in the same tone. Freaking hilarious^^
Last but not least. I hate it when Professor Dumbledore died~ I knew he was going to die, but in this manner?! Its like the first time I ever see him so helpless... At the cave where he was pleading Harry to not feed him the potion anymore, but he himself had previously instructed Harry to not listen to him... And the second time when he pleaded with Severus Snape to not kill him. Both time he was rejected, the latter causing his life. I hate it when he is portrayed to be so helpless.
And for me I think Malfroy performed well in this movie. He was able to bring forth every deniel, every confusion that the character was feeling. Espcially during the last part where he was instructed to kill Dumbledore but couldn't bare to say the killing curse. The denial, the torn feelings that he felt going over to the dark side, the remorse, the helplessness of the situation and the occasional evilness, he brought it all out with his eyes and his facial expressions. So the award of best acting I will give it to Malfroy this time instead of Harry. Way to go Draco!
The graphics in this movies were excellent with all the flying around and the breaking of the bridge. However, the lack of bright colours is a disappointment, making the movie a bit dull but it suits the solemness of this theme.
As a parting note, to Severus Snape: You pathetic excuse of a life, how can you bear to kill the very man who trusted you stupid Snape,? How could you bear to kill the man that believed in you when nobody else did? You evil and vile thing. You are now officially on my hate list while Draco is out of it. Vile creature...Grr.
And to Dumbledore, rest in peace my dear old Professor, you will always be remembered...*cries*

Why is it that when pretty girls get teased it is mean, but when the same thing happen to girls who are not the norm its plain funny?
Just because i laugh it off doesn't mean its okay and no damage is done. I just dun want to say anything in front of others... After-all I'm still a girl, and it will still hurt if it gets too far. Once or twice I will laugh it off but some comments really hurt, though I will still laugh, they return to haunt me when I'm all alone...
Just because I keep quiet, it doesn't mean I'm fine...

Nothing much to say actually...
School is starting soon and I'm more or less prepared... Clothes, shoes and bag settled... Just a new hairstyle, maybe a new pair of spectacles and LOTS of weight to lose.
I was flipping through the newspapers today and came across this article that I would like to share with all those who haven't seen it.
I forgot which country that this happened in, but this guy was given two Japanese chickens by his friend. They named the rooster "Micheal" and the hen "Aicy". This cute couple went on to have a couple of chicks. Micheal, having not seen any other chickens, was said to have mistaken the guy's wake up calls for his son for the usual "Koo Koo Koo" and had ever since been calling the son's name at sunrise every morning.
But the touchy part of this story is that when Aicy was bitten to death one day by a big dog, poor Micheal was there to witness the poor mutilated body of his beloved wife. After that, he was said to have gotten into depression and dropped all his colourful tail feathers. Now, he's playing the role of a mother to his children by making the bed and hoisting them off to sleep at night.
Touching right? Even chickens are so devoted... Wonder what's wrong with humans, the supposedly "Superior" beings...
Ciao.

I love my sisters
Saturday, July 11, 2009
Tonight, I had dinner with my Good sisters that I haven't met up for a long time. After dinner, we just sat around macs and chat about old times. We had known each other since primary school and I really had a great time looking back at all the things we went through. Together we played super games, chased each other around during recess, got branded bad kids by the same teacher that firmly believe that we were bullying ithers when it is actually the other way around. I still remember what happened to me in primary school.
My bag was thrown into the boys toilet, I was threatened, they poured things over my bags... Everytime when they got too far I would run away crying, and my these two friends will always stick by me. Xinyi would comfort me while brave Si Han would confront the stupid boys for me... Actually thinking back, if I was the me that I am now, those boys would have a terrible time... Haha!!!
I really missed the good old days where things were just really simple... Its either a yes or a no, and what you see is what you get. But the adult world is like totally different with all the trickery, masks and deceptions, and I'm already halfway into it haha^^
But I'm really thankful for my good sisters, and I believe that no matter which future path that I take, we will always be around for each other. LOVE YOU GIRLS!!!!
Today was the Freshmen Orientation Day of SIM-UOL.
I actually went there with the belief that it will be a terrible day. Ive always hated orientations and camps since young. Maybe its because I lack confidence in myself. I dun like the feeling of everyone's attention on you when you can't complete a game and the whole team has to take the forfeit with you. I hate the trust games the most as I dun think anybody can ever take my weight. Most importantly, I hate making a fool out of myself.
But the orientation today was really nothing like I expected. I have initially told Alison that we would go hide in the toilet when the time came to play games. However, when that time came, I was enjoying myself such that I have no intention of going to the toilet to hide at all.
The day started with me and Alison meeting up in the morning @ 7am to squeeze with all the CJC peeps on bus 105, followed by bus 151. We reached SIM like super early @7.45am (I'm sorry for my miscalculation Alison.) Haha... So we just went about walking around, trying to find the exact location of the orientation. We got stuck somewhere between lecture hall 4.20 (we were supposed to go to 4.02) and I was seriously considering whether she made a mistake in the location as we can't seem to locate 4.02.
It was then that we met Pei Yee, and she asked if she could just join us since she was all alone. so the three of us went in together. The grouping for orientation was simple. we were seated into rows, and every three rows were one group. By some sort of fate, Mr Twenty-One and I were put into the same group even though we were standing REALLY far apart^^(I was at the front and he was at the back with his friend.)
The first game that we played in our OG was the chain name calling games. It was a nice change from Whacko as it was introduction minus the competition, which removes most of the fun, but made it easier to remember the names.
The next few games were rather fun too. We played things like "我是船长", and "Hunter, Fire, Earthquake", and there's even a "Elephant, Coconut and Superman" game that got the guys SUPER high. I give the credits to the coconut action which involves some shaking of the butts haha^^
In the later part of the day, we went on something like an Amazing Race that involved some really embarrassing games. First up was the extended version of Twister, where we were made to stand guy-girl style and hold hands. The game court had pieces of paper taped to it each with a alphabet on it. Then someone have to choose a word card and we were to form a human chain and step on the alphabet forming the words one by one. The game eventually became fun as everyone got into the court and it became squeezy mwahaha...
The next one was this game that the whole team have to squeeze onto a couple of chairs and move forward while chairs are removed from the back and moved to the front. it didn't help much that I took up quite a lot of space=( I was like totally SQUASHED between two guys and you better believe it was damn embarrassing.
Overall it was nice lah.... Now. What CCA should I take up? Mwahaa... So long guys!

Yesterday was my last day at work... We had been splitted into two groups because of the H1N1 thing so I didn't get to say a proper goodbye to everyone! Thank god for post-it notes! Mwahaha... Anyway, thinking back, 5 months passed by really fast! I can still remember my first month into my job, when everything and everyone was still new to me... 5 months later, I'm already very comfortable with everyone and everything, but it was already time to move on...
Sigh.
After work yesterday, the whole group of us went out to eat. Initially, it was to be a temp staff night, but when the time came, another two of the perm staff joined us. But the mood was still as jovial as these two perm staff hang out with us quite often too. So the whole outing included Hong Yun, Cheng Yang, Mei Wei, Wei Ying, Vincent, Alvin and of course, Mi~~>.<
Our dinner was at Sakae Sushi @ Harbor Front Centre. We couldn't decide whether to go for main courses or side dishes so we decided to just order what we each felt like eating. The common choice was sashimi so we ordered like two plates of salmon, and some other dishes that were strongly recommended by Mei Wei.
My order: Chicken Teriyaki Ramen and salmon My views: I think Ajisen one is nicer>.< The salmon rocks!
Wei Ying's order: Sides of salmon and more salmon... What i feel could be her view: Too much salmon already. She got tired of it...
Hong Yun's order: A bit of everything. What i feel could be his view: he was concentrating too much on the wasabi^^
Mei Wei Order: Sunshine maki, some cooked salmon thing, some prawn thing, and more salmon What i feel could be her view: She loves everything, although her allergy worked up because of the prawn haha...
Alvin order: Some kind of bento What i feel could be his view: I never see him eat so I also dunno haha...
Cheng Yang's order: Some beef Udon and salmon + sunshine maki What i feel could be his view: His face is as usual, his mood is as usual(nv talk much), so i guess the food is as usual^^>.<
Vincent's order: some beef thing with some fried thing and miso soup~~ What i feel could be his view: From what I saw he was either really hungry, or the food was really good^^
And today... I was prepared to sleep in late cause no work~~~ BUT DAMN. I woke up at 8am...
>.<
Play around on my computer a bit... Then in the afternoon went to hand in time sheets and went to Bishan library on my way as well. Did you guys know from now on we can borrow 6 books from now on? I didn't. And I was pleasantly surprised!
I borrow 12 of my Chinese books mwahaha... Come to think of it, I think I had gone mad then haha^^
Okie! Off to read my books now!
So long people!

Although he is really mean, he's true to Lily Evans to the very end...
I like his dedication in love,
And how he played double agent.
As an extra note, I love him even more when Alan Rickman was depicting him...
He's really a great actor as he manage to portray Snape as some more even more interesting in the movie.
His scene though short, are always captivating...
Alan Rickman has a charm when depicting Severus Snape that makes it almost impossible to move your eyes away when he comes onto the screen...
His every movement gives out elegance, true to his name as the Half Blood Prince...
Alan Rickman did a great job with all the expression...
Even a cold expression that Snape always wears on his face, there's a lot of emotions going on in his black eyes...
His voice is eerily soothing...

Corpse Bride
Wonderful storyline, nice clash of colours and out of the world imagination put to work.
I love the songs, I love the bride (I believe she was named Emily), the groom Victor, the spiders in the underworld and the maggot in Emily's eyes.
The songs are catchy and meaningful, just like the Omppa Lumpas' songs in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
The way how Victor went from being afraid of Emily to falling in love. The way he went from wanting to escape from the Land Below back to the Land of the Living, to how he could bear to leave.
The way the spiders put life across in the song "Tears to Shed" when Emily was heart-broken that Victor had lied to her. "Everybody knows that's just a temporary state, which is cured very quickly when we met our fate!" the spider sung when Emily said that she couldn't compare to Victoria who "still breathes there".
I especially loved that part where Emily sacrificed herself so that the man that she loves, Victor, could be with a girl "worthy" of him, Victoria.
There's only two things I didn't like in the movie
Victoria, and the fact that Emily turned into hundred of butterflies after she sacrificed herself for Victor...
Eww... I almost screamed out in fear when the hundred of butterflies appeared on the movie screen, looking all too ready to pop out of the screen all thanks to 3D technology...
Hotel Rwanda
This is a movie based on the true account of one of the most horrifically ugly events in recent history, when the Hutu extremists of Rwanda initiated a terrifying campaign of genocide, massacring hundreds of thousands of minority Tutsis (who had been given power by the departed Belgian colonists), while the rest of the world looked on and did nothing.
The truth factor was what make this movie really attractive for me. The touching effect of the idea that the main character Paul was able to display such courage in the face of adversity just multiply with the fact that this was an true account of a great man whose couragous acts saved many others.
When the European guests and staff were all flown away from Rwanda, all that were left was just Paul Rusesabagina and a couple of the local staff.
Not only was he able to think fast on his feet to think of ways to save all the lives that lies in the very hotel that he lives in, he did not give up hope when people whom he trusted to help them disappointed him time and again. The local police that Paul always worked with no longer wants to be involved in helping to save the many refugees that the hotel was putting up. The rebels threatened to enter the hotel at any minute, everyone was scared out of their wits.
The UN did nothing to help but just took care of their own Euporean brothers and sisters, leaving behind the helpless refugees in a dangerous situation. With the backing of the United Nations gone, Paul and his many refugees found themselves to be danger constantly. Paul was only left with a mind and no military backing to work with. In the movie, he made used of human sympathy to try to get people in helping them. He requested individuals in the hotel whom had contacts with influential westerners to call them up.
As quoted from his lines, "Call them up, say your goodbyes to them. And when you say goodbye to them, make sure that you make it sounds like you are reaching out through the phones to hold their hands. Make them feel that if they let go of that hand, we will die. We will SHAME them into helping us." The tatic worked and soon, help arrived from the United Nation.
Overall, this is one of the few shows that can get me crying almost through half of the show. And if you had watched this movie before, personally, I feel that the most impact-ful part of the show was when Paul and his staff were driving in a foggy area. The ride suddenly turned very bumpy, and Paul said, "Oh my, you have driven off the road!" HIs companian replied that, "I'm very sure I'm still in the road!" And Paul frantically answered, "Stop the car! You are going to drive us into the river!" But when he got out of the car to investigate, he came to realised that they were indeed still on the road. HOwever, the road was now littered with the bodies of the murdered Tutsis. They were actually driving over the bodies, that was what made the ride very bumpy. The whole impact of the scene was terrific.

People always say Scorpios are very mysterious
I agree
Scorpio THE SCORPION- the sign of Transformation
Scorpio's are intense and have an ability to wait a very long time before they take action to put right a wrong
Scorpio are known not to forgive or forget easily- Someone ho had been in the war path of a scorpion is probably off somewhere still licking the wounds as this particular star sign is notorious for their fiery temper
Learnt enough about Scorpios? Here's my favourite is the following:
Scorpio never forgets a gift or a kindness, and it's richly rewarded. Conversely, he also remembers an injury or an injustice, but there are different ways of reacting
The eagle will crush the enemy so the enemy learns never to hurt him again, win the fight, and leave the defeated to go his own way
The deadly nocturnal scorpion will first sting, then plan destruction, then sting again. He's not content with merely evening the score. He must totally destroy the enemy, or at least top him
The typical scorpion stinger will lie awake nights figuring how to get even. These scorpions are seldom content with forcing the shoe on the other foot to teach enemies how it feels. They glue the sandal on with cement
Scary huh? Now you know not to step on my tail...HEHEHE...^^
sometimes people aren't going to trust you,
and it may be for no reason at all.
sometimes, people just judge you on what they think you will do,
on who they think you are.
and there's really nothing you can do about it.
but just remember one thing,
they're not cheating you, they're cheating themselves.
